While on a recent holiday near Tondela, Viseu, I managed to do a number of really good walks around Caramulo, based on some local guidebooks. How similar or different is the walking scene in Portugal please? Do they have public footpaths, or right to roam? Or is it largely based on paths and tracks?

Where we live there are lots of footpaths and way marked trails. Some land is fenced off for cultivating but we have always been able to wander freely elsewhere. It's great walking country.

Would be interested in meeting up with other expats living the area.

Graham O, if by 'in Portugal' you mean all of Portugal, check out the public walking paths in Madeira - the levada system (irrigation canals with maintenance paths) throughout the whole island provide paths through all terrains and all levels of difficulty. A walker's paradise.

Here is a link to a guide for walking paths around the silvercoast. My husband and I have found some lovely walks using this guide. ... ultimedia/

There may be others for other regions.
