Does anyone know if road tax has to be paid for a Kymco moped (max. 50 cc)? A couple of years ago my brother in Holland bought one (well, I bought it on his behalf) so his daughters would have transport whilst visiting their clapped-out auntie. The guy in the shop told me at the time that road tax did not have to be paid, but I got a missive from Finanças today indicating I am in arrears. I hope it's a mistake! Can someone enlighten me please?

According to this IUC is free for mopeds (scroll down for motociclos).

May I kiss you, Old Bloke? ;-)

I tried to google it but my Portuguese is thus that a lot of the time I read what I want to read, which sometimes has nothing to do with what is actually written.

Your link is EXTREMELY useful and I will read it thoroughly (and properly)....

I don't understand enough Portuguese to know the correct answer, but I'm just thinking out loud here. In the UK a VEL (like IUC) is free for certain classes of vehicles BUT you still have to get one, if you don't you can be fined. Just wondering if PT have similar rules and you have to get the IUC paperwork each year but pay nothing for it?

Not having had a moped since I was 16 I really have no idea. I will find out when I do battle with Finanças and let you know. I will have to go there because doing battle over the phone is still a bit icky. I can make telephone calls in PT but standing my ground and grasping everything that is being said for 100% is still not the case. As they want 1200 Euros (!) it's worth the trip.
