Hello everyone. This is my first post on this forum, so I hope I do it right.

We have an apartment in downtown Faro, which we bought three years ago. We'd now like something bigger and, to that end, have bought a plot in the Mouraria urban rehabilitation area of the city. We need an architect familiar with "rehabilitating" a ruin in that location, who speaks really good English (a Brit would be ideal!).

Anyone got any advice?

In theory any Architect is capable of this kind of work but in reality (in my opinion) very few actually are. The initiative to maintain the character of the old town in Faro is a great one ...

I would start at the Camara and ask for a list of people they suggest, I would then walk around the area and choose a few properties that have been lovingly refurbished already (in your view) and then knock on the door and ask who they used.

Ability to speak English is important I agree but secondary to being the best at doing the job. Most professionals speak English or if they don't they have someone within the company that does. Choose someone on merit first and foremost

Thanks, MrBife.

I agree that the ability to do a good job trumps the English fluency card. In fact, that's why we're looking.

We engaged an architect last year who had very good English and loads of enthusiasm for the project. Sadly, as time went on, he seemed to lose interest, resulting in poor design decisions. With regret, we realised it wasn't working and let him go. So now we need someone else.

Anyway, thanks for your help; we'll keep looking :)
