I have a mobile phone and use a NOS package. Next month (July) I'm going to be in Malta for 2 weeks and then the UK for another 2. I've just read online that EU roaming fees have been abolished from this month onwards... So, my basic question is will my phone work in these countries without needing to put in a local SIM card (which I did last year in the UK) and will it really cost the same as using the phone here in Portugal? I'll need the data plan as well.

Thank you!

It shouldn't cost any more than it does in Portugal but there are some additional charges over and above what you'd pay extra in Portugal if you breach contracted limits or fair usage policy.

There's a link here to the NOS info on the subject http://www.nos.pt/particulares/telemove ... NOS_VM.PDF

Hope this helps.

I think you need to be careful on this one. As usual the EU has left the gate wide open for companies to abuse this directive.
Firstly I suspect you will only get 3g wherever you go, not 4G. So they throttle the speed when roaming, so thats not the same as you would get in Portugal. Secondly I have a feeling they will also put a cap on your usage, which will not be the same allowance you get in Portugal. The EU has agreed an EU wholesale price for DATA, at €7.70 / Gigabyte. If I were you I would make sure that you see your monthly payment, divide that by 7.70 and then x2, and that I think will be your allowance when roaming. Otherwise you would find people from cheap area of EU taking out contracts in expensice areas and using the data, this aint gonna happen !!!!

Hi all interested parties.

Now 2 months into the EU rule to allow data roaming as in contract country.
Complete RUBBISH as usual with anything to do with the EU.

I have a 30gb data contract with MEO (been running 2 years)
Have been in UK since mid June.
Invoice for June showed no extra payment needed to cover my usage in UK.
(EE is the provider that MEO use in UK)
But here is the rub.
July started and I have just received a text to say that I have used 80% of my allowance.
Except I havent used 80% of my 30gb, I have in fact used 5.5gb, and if that is 80%, then all I will get is 7gb NOT 30gb.
In addition you are not allowed 4g only 3g, very slow by comparison.
Buyer beware as usual in Portugal
