Hi,

Does anyone have any advice on buying English books (NB not kindle/downloads - actual paperback books).

I'm looking to buy around half a dozen at a time. Say, for the sake of argument, a mix of classics/sci-fi/text books.

I'd normally get them from Amazon UK (or ask a local bookshop to order them) but there doesn't seem to be a way of filtering out who will deliver to Portugal from the UK site. The Spanish site doesn't have the ones I want.

Would it make sense to have them delivered to a UK relative and post them on or is there another option? The post them on method is pretty expensive too.

Are there bookshops in Coimbra that could get them bundled with another order?

Not so worried about waiting for delivery but I'd rather not pay £10 delivery on a £3 book.

Have a look at ordering via the Spanish Amazon site (amazon.es) as they treat delivery to Portugal differently

I have used www.bookdepository.com who gave good service.

Alan: That looks promising.

Slightly more expensive than Amazon UK but way cheaper when the postage is taken into account. They also seem to have everything I've looked for.

I'll put an order in and see how it goes.

Thanks for that.

Hi

Or go to any market and many people will sell books usually for about 1€ or last weekend a seller next to me was selling 3 for 1€ as he was no longer going to sell books. You may even find a stall that does swaps.

Peter

Thanks Peter.

I may try that too but I am looking for specific titles rather than just books in English.

Cheers

Perhaps check what service they use to deliver with though.
For me the Postal service from the UK is horrendous (diplomatically avoiding blame pointing), things always take at least 10 days (I'm 40km from Lisbon, not in the boondocks) and about 15% don't turn up to my PO Box at all.
Amazon Prime can deliver within 1-2 days usually, when not sent from an Amazon warehouse its usually 3-4 days. Hate to say, but its awesome service.

Ordered 3 books (at the same time) and they were all here within 10 days with Christmas in the middle. They came in two different posts a couple of days apart so that implies they will always come that quickly or sooner. Everything I looked for seemed to be available. Prices were a little higher than Amazon if you've signed up to prime but lower than Amazon without prime.

Two Philip K Dicks and Moby Dick

Now I'm typing that order I think it's time to track down a shrink :-)

All the classics are available to download for free now and there are 58,000 of them just on this site. https://www.gutenberg.org/

Easy instant access to them any time on a low cost Kobo or Kindle device.

Other newer stuff available instantly via Amazon and others
