Does anyone on the Forum use a Po box and is it complicated to have one?

Yes and No in that order. Go to Post Office - fill in form- show ID - Pay Money - they give you a key - Job Done

It's about €35 a year for a box inside the post office or one with access on the outside wall so you can visit out of hours. You pay for the Calendar year (renewable end December for the next year) and still pay the full amount even if you sign up in July. If you don't pay then the box (and number) goes to someone else and your mail gets returned.

For your own box near your house ...

Go to Post Office - Buy Box and lock - Fit it yourself or get someone to do it for you - Go back to post office again to tell them you have a new box and ask them to associate it with your name. Postman will visit and put a number on the box which then becomes your address for postal purposes. Post office will advise the post code. No repeat costs after buying the box which coincidentally is €35. Whole process made very much more efficient and level of service for ever after moves to a new and efficient high if you give the postie that delivers to the box a bottle of the cheap Lidl whisky and shake his hand.

That's great and thanks, I just think renting and changing address it will be easier to have a PO box.

Wondering if they offer a 'upgraded service' where they will text or email you when something is delivered to you PO Box?
Would be very handy to have a PO Box, but only if there is a quick way of being notified of a delivery.
( I would only use it for small parcels from ebay etc, normal mail directly to my house address).

Our post office does offer a service where they will email you, but it's only to advise that a recorded delivery is waiting for you. It's 9 euros per year.

And just a heads up on the post office box (apartado) if you don't renew your next years subscription before the end of the year, you will receive a fine, and it's almost as much as the yearly subscription. :-)

Hi there,

Does anyone know if you can use your actual address with a PO box, or do you have to use a PO box number and the post office address?

Thanks
Angela

Happily the proud owner of Apartado 36. Took 10 minutes. Adding to the above:
A. It doesn't have to be at the post office that your post goes through, I have it in the neighbouring district as its easier to get to, park at and I go past it often anyway.
B. It can be completely separate from your actual house address, all of my mail still comes to the letterbox at my house, I just use the PO Box address when I want a package delivered there. Explain if you want this clearly.
C. Cost was a whopping 71 Euros for the box until Dec 31st, plus the service to email and sms when I have a delivery. (Setubal/Lisboa area area)
D. Portuguese numbers only for sms. Helpful guy said at first no email service available, but then found it in the options on the computer system.

So all of the neighbourhoods dogs can relax a little as the numbers of van arriving drops to a trickle, hurrah! ;-)

Thank you so much! Does this apply even if there is no house number as per now associated with the house?
