Hi rhys

Yes I use both systems, public and private, depending which suits my needs at the time. I have had two major surgeries in the public system free. Of course I pay minor followup fees,ie, consultation with surgeon 7 Euros, full blood tests 7.75 Euros, X-rays a couple of Euros. In both instances mine were emergencies so did not go through a GP.

For private GP I use International Health Center in Albufeira. Consultation is 30 Euros. Physio is 35 Euros.

Privately for specialists I use Hospital Particular do Algarve. Consultation 70 Euros but I use my Modelo/Continente/Wells Health card and pay 41.18 Euros plus get about 6 Euros put onto my Continente card so technically 35 Euros. I had 2 X-rays recently and with discount was charged 18 Euros each plus bit in Continente card. Get appointments swiftly usually at location of choice, they have 8 in Algarve. Dental work also discounted but not hospitalisations.

Hope this helps.

Victoria

Thank you ~ but what is the Modelo / Continente card you mentioned ?

Is that some sort of Annual Health Insurance plan which costs a certain amount each year and then you get a reduction on specific procedures / consultations ?

And how much does it cost ?

I have no specific health worries at this writing ~but am seeking nevertheless to have in place knowledge of what to do should one, eg, start having a heart attack / be knocked off one's bike by a lorry or whatever.

What would one do in such a medical emergency ? Perhaps this has been covered before or elsewhere ?

Rhys, I don't know where you are but you must have a Continente grocery store near you. If so, go to Customer Services and get a store card. It used to be called Modelo years ago when I got mine. They have in-store mini health shops called Wells. Wells have this scheme which can be used at many places. When you use one of these places you show your card when you pat and you get a discount. There is no cost for this.

If you are in the State system and you have an accident/heart attack/whatever you/someone calls 112 and off you go to hospital! Cancer, TB and Diabetes are automatically free here irrespective of your residency status, not sure about heart attack.

It gets curiouser.

Presumably those specialities are free only within the state hospital system, not the private network / institutions ?

If there is an emergency.........do the ambulance people take you to the nearest facility, ie irrespective of private or public ?

In the first instance I suppose I would want to make use of the EHIC card.
Tho' if the state system is dire ( have read mixed reviews ) I would prefer to pay if the private hospitals really are better ?

I use my card (available to anyone) at the private hospital but not public. It lists where you can use it.

The ambulance would take you to the nearest hospital, public U presume unless you request otherwise.

Do I assume you are not a PT resident since you have a UK EHIC card? If you are a resident you should be in the Portuguese Health System and have an SNS number But you can also have a Portuguese EHIC card for use in other EU countries, including UK.

We only have PT state and use private when we want as we have no connection with UK nor private insurance. We are retired.

I am UK resident for all tax and legal purposes, but own a small house in Altura ( eastern Algarve ~ nearest large town Vila Real de Sto António ~).

I have visited Portugal off and on for 47 years, including a whole academic year in Lisbon ( '72~'73 ) studying Portuguese in the Faculdade de Letras ( rather more time spent in restaurants and nightclubs in the Bairro Alto than in the classroom, I confess........) . I do speak Portuguese , but still find it difficult to understand when people are speaking at normal speed....

This may change in the future but my present Plan ( ~i know ~that's God's joke..........the Man with the Plan ) is to spend spring and autumn in the Algarve ( with trips, hither and yon, including Lisbon, but also i would like to explore the Alentejo ).

So this would be April to early June; September thru' November. Making sure to be less than six months in any calendar year.

I am retired also........no partic. health problems ( well I have a few but medications and checkups all under control in England ) which would require attention in Portugal but.........you never know........An emergency can come out of the blue ........

I imagine that someone somewhere has written a large article setting out the various dos and don'ts, pluses and minuses, relating to the system/s of health care in Portugal, but where to find it I don't know.
