Sadly we just heard that our project has been turned down by the highways agency! (The camara have approved it, but IP have the final say)

So we're thinking of looking north of Porto for a new start. Braga looks nice.

Anyone living up that way with any insights into good areas to consider?

Many thanks

Baraga's a nice city, as is GuimarĂ£es.

What sort of criteria do you have? You mention a project - what's the nature of that?

There's a lot of stunning countryside, beaches and small towns north of Braga, where I live. Can't recommend it highly enough as an area but it does depend what you're after.

We are looking for at least a hectare of land, either with an existing decent sized house or ruin to be rebuilt or where a new building will be permitted.

Ideally we would like privacy/seclusion - this appears to be harder to find, perhaps because it's more densely populated up there?

Being within an hour of porto would make our lives easier.

We have a few places of interest from ERA, we're waiting for gps coordinates so we can see exactly where they are.

Any info welcome, thanks.

I suppose true isolation, in the sense of not having your land bordering any other private property, might be a bit difficult to find although even where there are houses, many are unoccupied for most of the year. There are certainly areas I'd call remote where dwellings are sparse.

Whether you have a preference for flat land might have a bearing on where to look but the area around Ponte de Lima might be worth considering. That would be exactly 1 hour's drive from Porto airport on excellent roads. Another 20 minutes or so would get you to Ponte de Barca / Arcos de Valdevez area and beyond that you've got the Peneda GerĂªs National Park - all pretty stunning scenery and no shortage of properties for sale, some with considerable amounts of land.

Thank you for the info, it sounds gorgeous up there. I can't wait to start exploring.
