Dear All,
Apologies if this is a much repeated boring topic. I did search but couldn't find the details I need. We arrived in the Algarve on Wednesday and are renting an Airbnb in Carvoeiro pending buying a property. Today we went to Portimao Financas to get our fiscal numbers. We took a ticket and waited for 45 minutes before meeting a woman who (somewhat joyfully) declared that she couldn't speak English. She did understand what we wanted and we presented our passports. She opened a passport and stated something in Portuguese that she kept repeating. We asked whether she could get someone who spoke English but no joy, so we left.

Does anyone know what we were missing? Do you need something from your country of origin stating that you are no longer tax resident there? We presented our Airbnb rental address but is this acceptable? Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Brian and Joan`

If you're applying for your NIF as a resident you possibly require an Atestado de Residência from your local Junta de Freguesia (that 'proves' your address) and if you're applying as a non-resident you might need a Fiscal Representative if you're not an EU citizen/resident and/or proof of home address.

From https://www.portaldocidadao.pt/pt/web/a ... a-singular

"Nota: No momento da inscrição, os cidadãos não residentes em território nacional são obrigados a designar um representante com residência em território nacional."

It may be that an AirBnB won't be considered acceptable evidence of residency in Portugal. Of course, your need your NIF to take out a proper lease. And you can't get your NIF without a proper address etc etc.

I thought that the need for a financial representative was dropped some years ago.

Only for EU citizens/residents (not sure which), for whom it's optional to have a fiscal representative. I'm not sure of the OP's circumstances but Australia is usually considered to be non-EU, even if they did enter Eurovision!

Thanks all for your replies. We've decided to use an agent to help as we also need assistance applying for NHR status.

@richard: Good point (lol) but we are lucky to have dual citizenship: Australian and Irish.

Resurrecting an old topic here.

We are hoping to move to Portugal this year and hopefully before Oct 31st. We will need to get a NIF and have a few questions.
1) How long does it take? We are on a house hunting trip in July and although we may not see a suitable house then, we would like to get the ball rolling by opening a bank account. If we don't buy by end Oct, we may rent and then look around once we are "in country".
2) I see that someone above used their UK address, so presumably we will need some proof of residence in the UK. Which documents do we need or are likely to need please?
3) I presume that the NIF is not related to a particular Conselho/Camara, so there is no problem getting one in a different area to where we eventually live.

Thanks for your help

Graham

1. Depends on how long the queue is but not long (immediate) once you're being served.
2. UK address (while still in EU) is fine - you'll want the likes of bank statements, correspondence from HMRC etc to prove your address, in addition to the passports. They'll probably ignore most of it but easier to have too much. It's much more challenging to obtain your NIF as a (previously undocumented) resident.
3. You can get your NIF anywhere, especially as a non-resident, but when you become resident you'll have to notify the change of address/country of residence by presenting your residency documentation and you'll then be allocated to the appropriate tax office.

Thank you Richard, that is what I was hoping/expecting, but it's nice to have it confirmed.
