Hi, I'm new to this forum.

I'm moving to Portugal next month to stay with friends for up to a year on the Algarve while I find a place to live permanently. I think the Algarve may be too expensive so have been searching wider afield. The area around Cadaval near Lisbon seems far more reasonable but when I look at the annual weather maps the days of sun and rain look bad compared to the UK.
Is it just that region as I thought central Portugal would be much better or am I missing something.

Love to hear from anybody who lives in that region.
Cheers Martin

Hi Martin

I would look at better weather sites. I live inland from Coimbra and from now till October/ November even into December we expect blues warm to hot days.

Good luck with you search

Peter

Hi Peter
Thanks, I guess my concern (if that's the right word) is for the colder months.

Having looked at loads of weather sites the rainfall seems a higher than London, but in your experience would it be true to say that the days are sunnier, warmer and not as grey and dismal as in than UK?

Regards Martin

There is likely to be more rain, which can be heavy, as you will be near the Atlantic coast. Just a few nights with a light frost and no snow unless you go to the mountains on the Spanish border.

From the North to the South - its get warmer and maybe drier the further south you go.
Im just south of Lisbon, near Palmela, this winter never saw a daytime temperature less than 14.
Nights are obviously colder then, 6-10, down to 4 or 5 on cold weeks - these are the nights when the skies are clear and blue.
Weather is fairly honest here - its either grey and raining or clear and blue, not much overcast drudge.
(It doesn't actually rain much in London btw, just overcast a lot).
So, stay south if you want Portugal at its warmest, if the Algarve isn't for you, Alentejo is lovely and cheaper if you head inland away from the coast.

Two other important things:
Housing usually sucks as it has no insulation - so concentrate on a house that does/has good heating and you'll be far happier regardless of where you are (this is hard to find btw)
Wind - find somewhere sheltered and you can spend many lovely days outside even in the middle of winter - we had 18 degrees for example in February, and out of the wind it was lovely.

Hope that helps...
