does anyone know of a car rental company who don't ask for a credit card?

We had people staying with us recently and they left their card with which they had booked a car at Porto at home.

No one would rent them a car, they tried all the companies at the airport and it was no card no car.
Seems the rental company put a £1000. fee on the card but it only shows on your statement of its actually used.

I know someone who will rent a car for €90.00 a week if you want to get in touch with me, no card required.

There are a couple of rental agents you can book a car with, pre pay with a credit card etc. but whoever collects it does not have to show a credit card. i.e. They could get someone else to make the booking for them and collect the car without the need to show a card. www.economycarhire.com are a company who operate like this.

Avis for one you can prepay online without a credit card. I've also used Budget and paid a nominal deposit by debit card.

We are planning to come to C. Pt. about September to explore the area in the hope of moving there if we ever sell our house!

Would be interested in knowing more about the chap renting a car for 90 euros. Is this a private person or a garage or something? I am thinking about the legal/insurance side of it. Also, would this be somebody in your village or could the car be collected from Lisbon airport?

Not happy about giving a credit card and being (possilby) stung for 1,000 euros just because the car hire firm feels like it!

Credit Cards
Most of our suppliers require a valid credit card when collecting the vehicle, this CANNOT be a pre-paid card, or a debit card and MUST have sufficient funds available. If a credit card is required it is stated at the time of booking. We recommend to all clients that a valid credit card is always taken as a precaution when travelling in a foreign country.

Maybe this can be useful to those who, Like my daughter, is not aware of this business of credit card. She tried to rent a car at the airport in Lisbon and no way to do it. No cash accepted, no other credit card than the driver accepted.
(She didn't have a credit card) I will spare you the rest of the story.

MAKE SURE ALWAYS HAVE A VALID CREDIT CARD ON YOU. By the way,this is not only for Portugal.

You can use a Portuguese Multi Banco card . this is a debit card.
